The idea of creating a Chinatown Cultural Center & Museum in the Republic Cafe building was proposed almost two decades ago. The recession of 2008 was a setback to our plans. But we never gave up on that project, and are very happy to report the following:

GOOD NEWS

Escrow has finally closed on the sale of the Republic Cafe/Lotus Inn property. The City of Salinas has contracted with TEF architects to begin design work for the Republic Café. Working with them is Groundwork Preservation, an historic architecture preservation firm, which will help to preserve this nationally registered historic building.

During a recent walk-through, a structural engineering company was present to view the damage to the building and determine what was needed to stabilize the structure (fix the roof and fire damage to make it water tight). The engineering company also properly secured the building from trespassers. Funds are available to clean out the fire damage, and that work has begun. Things are moving along!

ACES is now tasked to renovate the interior of the building, and to design and create exhibit and community space within the Chinatown Museum & Cultural Center. It is a huge project; we will need your help!

Revitalization of Salinas Chinatown is key to the RC project. Infrastructure improvements are being considered to provide a safe and pleasant environment for the community, housing, and retail, which will also enhance our connection to the downtown area.

While we have always viewed Chinatown revitalization as a way to honor our ancestors’ legacies and preserve the history and cultures of the three communities (Chinese, Japanese, Filipino) of Chinatown—we know that the Cultural Center and Museum in Chinatown can serve people of all ethnic groups, ages, and economic status.
