ACE Tri-tip Takeout Time: Nov. 4

Ready for some Tri-tip BBQ?

Support ACE by purchasing a yummy tri-tip take-out dinner with meat from our local Star Market, cooked and served by members of the Buddhist Temple of Salinas! Besides its reputation for being delicious, the Tri-tip dinner serves 4 to 6 people, and comes with salad and rolls!

Supporting ACE helps us develop programs to preserve, promote, and enrich the history and multicultural identity of Salinas Chinatown—historically the home of the Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino communities of Salinas. It gives us the tools to gather stories and photographs, interview Chinatown locals, and to implement our plans to improve Chinatown and create a cultural center and museum in the Republic Cafe.

Salinas Obon Festival 2017

I visited the Salinas Obon Festival yesterday, organized by the Buddhist Temple of Salinas. The placed was packed with festival-goers, lines forming at the food vendor tents for scrumptious Japanese food (and in one case, Filipino lumpia!), and to view bonsai and ikebana demonstrations, and Asian crafts. The Salinas Kendo Club demonstration, Obon Odori dancing, and San Jose Taiko were exciting! It was a very successful event. I also met up with Binh Danh, the artist who is currently photographing the changes that Salinas Chinatown is undergoing. His process is unusual: he uses a daguerreotype camera, and processes his film right on the site. We look forward to seeing his work and exhibit when the project is finished. Some images from yesterday’s Obon Festival:

Meditation in Salinas Chinatown

BuddhistCtr
The Buddhist Temple of Salinas offers a meditation class:

Meditation Experience class:

Rev. Orai Fujikawa, resident minister of Buddhist Temple of Salinas, has established a Nembutsu Meditation program for the people in Salinas. This practice has been gaining professional interest in many areas of medical application. Recent publication in the main stream Journal of American Medical Association underscores the seriousness of this interest, and helps to bring attention to meditation as a technique for dealing with the suffering and stress experienced in daily life. This program is open to anyone who has interest in meditation. Although it is held at the Buddhist Temple, anyone of any faith should feel welcome. The date is 9AM-10AM every Saturday, at 14 California St. Salinas, but please check their calendar to verify the date and time, or Tel 424 4105 for the latest information, as it may be cancelled on some Saturdays.
